Rather than messing with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, what I've done is just
install Gears normally, then replace the
~/.mozilla/firefox/abcd1234.default/extensions/{000a9d1c-beef-4f90-9363-039d44f309b8}
directory with a symlink to my
google-gears/gears/bin-dbg/installers/gears-linux-dbg-0.3.25.0
directory.
