It's quite clear that Google shifted focus away from the Gears Plugin and
towards Chrome or even "Chrome
Frame" for their services.
There is no excuse for this happening AGAIN after the same unnecessary
delay when Firefox 3.5 came out. The
code freeze for Firefox 3.6 happened a very long time ago and there have
been several betas and release
candidates. Mozilla urged all their add-on developers to make their plugins
compatible for weeks.
Normally my motto is to never ascribe to malice that which can be
adequately explained by incompetence. But
given Google's and their employee's reputation I really struggle to
understand the amount of incompetence
necessary for this to happen again ...
