The gears-linux-opt.xpi mentioned in comment 21 is already spoilt (64 bit).
The
gears-linix-new.xpi from that post does not work in firefox 3.6. I've been
playing
around a bit, added the fix from comment 48, then decided to download
firefox 3.5
using this:

(but
not
by using wget, just using the browser). Then I installed it, checked the
version
using Help -> about and... now I'm happily using Firefox 3.5 and
gears.google.com
tells me:
Gears is installed
Current version:
0.5.32.0;official;opt;linux;firefox
Probably I'll be having some safety leaks (anyone knowing some serious
ones?) and
probably I'm missing out some functions... but I'll live with that.
