I got the XPI file ( http://dl.google.com/gears/current/gears-linux-opt.xpi ), extracted it, overwrote install.rdf with the linked version, recompressed and renamed the archive from .zip to .xpi, used File > Open from Firefox, and got this error:
Firefox could not install the file at
file:///home/chris/gears-linux-opt.xpi
because: Install script not found -204
