Hi Charles, See the instructions on this page: ( http://www.google.com/support/installer/bin/answer.py?answer=100386), you'll need to use the second variant of the uninstall command (the one preceeded with sudo).
Please note that we strongly discourage using Gears without Google Software Update since this can lead to you running an outdated/unsecure version of Gears.
