Al -- I have only a very high level understanding of the Microsoft Sync Framework and from what I know it is focused more on .net and desktop applications in trusted scenarios. Gears, on the other hand, is focused on browser applications. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer, hopefully someone else can actually let you know the pros and cons of each.
