Gears is wonderful product of Google, especially with releasing of mobile version.
I dig a little bit into Gears, Adobe AIR as well. Gears features greatly in seamless switching on/off with only few modification on existing Ajax pages. Since, for either Gears or AIR, you should fully isolate datalayer. Then why not make it seamless with Gears? Though not a full standalone, but Google developers had make it so perfect experience for users to install and enable/disable Gears. But anyway, Adobe AIR will produce difinitely standalone desktop app, featuring in beautiful UIs (Is your original UI not beautiful enough ?? :-) ). In my app, I tried to use Gears. But I am planning to make a AIR release as well to cater for those who prefer standalone app experience.
