Hey Steve,
I developed a gears app for my multinational company last year.
However it is more or less useless since there are all kinds of
trouble installing gears behind firewalls and proxies. We are many who
have asked for better (stand alone) install procedures and docs, but
it Google is indifferent for these requests. It is sad so many of can
not use Gears, it really is a fine piece of software.
