Because GLib probably won't find it then.
Actually I think GLib will find it there as long as /usr/local/share is
in XDG_DATA_DIRS, which is the case on Ubuntu and Debian at least. Not
installing to /usr/local/share is an outstanding bug which I'm eager to
see fixed:
