I would say that it must be worth a try(depending of course on what you 
presently use for a incub. medium).  The primary focal point for being 
suitable will be the texture and size of the particles.  If in fact the 
particles are <5mm, then I would say this may well be a good substitute.  I 
have seen some of these products the size of huge glinting marbles...much 
to large for application here.
