Ack!  How depressing, and not just because I was hoping for some of those 
_androyensis_ babies.

I've had very good luck stopping, though not killing, Californian ants with 
something called Anti-Ant---basically a liquid teflon goop that forms a 
slick strip they can't climb across.  I get it from KV Vet; I'm not sure 
who makes it.  I've been told it doesn't work on fire ants (they build 
bridges), but thankfully we don't have 'em.  Yet.  (It keeps fruit flies 
from climbing *out* of tanks, too.)
