Laura, I'm using a small piece of slate on top of an ancient resin heating
pad and it seems to work fine.  My LPS sells that plus lots of other rocks.

If you really want to see how hot or cold that rock is, try putting one of
those "digital" stick-on thermometers underneath the rock for an hour or so.
If it can't fit, cover the extra with white paper or something reflective.
Actually, you should probably insulate the thermometer from the bottom of
the tank if it isn't already.
