I second the choice of Ph. madagascarensis kochi for beginners! This is
a larger Phelsuma, therefore, easier to get appropriate sized food (even
for hatchlings), more 'abundant' and affordable and was very hardy for
me. This was my first Phelsuma species. The pair I kept were fascinating
to watch.

If you don't already have it get Sean McKeown's book on Day Geckos, he
also wrote three (or more) articles on Day Gecko keeping for Reptiles
magazine. Julie Bergman's Gecko Ranch sells two of these issues (on
keeping the larger and the smaller day geckos - Phelsumas), the third
article was on more difficult to keep Mauritius species (Phelsuma ornata
and Ph. inexpectata).

Other than getting an appropriately sized enclosure for the species you
select and having it set up prior to getting your geckos, locate a local
veterinarian that is familiar with treating geckos.

Good luck and have fun with this fascinating genus!
