It was recently elevated to species status (from a ssp. of P.ornata).
Usually "inexpectata" is reserved for the unexpected discovery in a given
locale.  Perhaps someone knows a bit more of the detail in this case?

Not sure, but if I remember correctly it was just recently listed as a
sub species of Phelsuma ornata.

In latin, in-exspectâtus (inexp-), a, um, adj., unexpected (class.).

I guess they weren't expecting to find this beautiful species.
