I started using oat bran instead, they seem to do better on that.

They will eat fruit, but it tends to stink up the place and attract fruit flies so I 
use very little fruit, mostly veggies like carrots, leafy greens or potatoes.

Don't we all! ;-) It is amazing how long roaches will live without maintenance too!
