it's really very little trouble.  (that's a "tub" I keep them in, not a 
top).  I decided to separate the beetles and pupae as they form to start 
a new colony partly out of curiosity to see how long it takes them to 
mature, and so I could throw away the "frass" without throwing away lots 
of microscopic eggs. I also hated to waste the beetles and pupae.  Some 
of my leos take the pupae wriggling or not, but they refuse the beetles. 
Just a means of maximizing my yield.

desert-dwelling kangaroo rats obtain most if not all of their moisture 
from the grains they eat (admittedly a bit juicier than rolled oats or 
processed bran) and also produce a highly concentrated urine.  Mealworms 
evolved over the centuries in bags of dry flour (meal).
