It was originally described as Stenodactylus scaber (both forms
masculine) but, since Cyrtopodion is neuter the specific name was
changed to scabrum (its a similar situation that Paroedura picta found
itself in).

The subspecies P. x. nocticolus was given full species status by
Murphy 15? years ago. The remaining forms are Mexican and not covered
by this work.
