Hello Steve and Julie,
We had our male Golden gecko (G. ulikovskii) out just last night. He sat on
my shoulder for several hours while I worked on a project and was quite well
behaved. His mate is not quite as settled and will not sit still for more
than a few minutes. While wild caught G. ulikovskii are not uncommon in the
pet trade there are just a few people working at breeding these beautiful
geckos. Wild caught Goldens are subject to the problems of other mass
imported geckos as they usually carry a high parasite load and any new
acquisitions should be scheduled for an immediate Vet. visit. G. ulikovskii
is a egg gluer which can make it difficult to hatch out little geckos due to
the fact that adults will eat newly hatched offspring if not protected. This
is quite different than G. gecko (Tokays) which do quite well with newly
hatched babies and will protect them from intruders (ouch). We now have two
pairs of G. ulikovskii and have really enjoyed keeping them over the past
few years. I would highly recommend Captive Bred G. ulikovskii for novice
gecko keepers with basic gecko keeping experience.
