If I might add....
I played the same type of game at home. I packed
up the box, the same one I later shipped the gex
in, and packed the same way (lined, all sides with
.75" Styrofoam), put in two high low thermometers,
one in a deli cup and one loose. I added heat
packs and made multiple runs with different time
length heating devices. I put the box in the
kitchen (simulate sitting in the post office) and
on the porch over night at sub 30 degree temps
(simulate waiting on the tarmac to be loaded
forever, or left on the truck). I found that where
you put the packs makes a LOT of difference. Taped
to the side of the box or taped to the deli cup,
the only good the heat packs did were to cook the
"gex" if they were inside all the time and the
packs were taped to the cups. And if you put the
box outside, the heat packs were non players,
30-40f by morning, no matter where they were put.
I still put them in when I ship, but that is just
for my conscience.
The other thing you folks need to consider is
routing. Just because it is going from point A to
B does not mean that it will not go waaaay north
or south on its path. Recall all Fedex goes
through Memphis. One has to look at the major
airline routes to see what is a likely path to get
from say, Florida to Oregon. Not quite sure how
one gets this information, other than picking the
hub carrier out of point A and looking at the hub
carrier at point B and seeing if it is a southern
route through Phoenix, a midwest route through
St. Louis or a northern route through Minneapolis.
It may be balmy in Miami and pleasant in Portland,
but a real Alberta clipper in Moline, where the
shipment sits for 8 hours.
Just my 2 cents worth. It is a great idea and I
support it. I have the temp equipment and will
donate (if I get it back, or better yet, one of
Burke's Leachies in exchange) and the $20 for the
USPS is not a concern.
