It would not be boring to me to hear your explanation of that information
(tyrosine positive and negative.) I am very interested in genetics, if
not totally confused by them.
Ron Tremper in the Leopard Gecko Manual states, "Basically, I have found
that the variations discovered so far in all geckos are the result of
simple recessive gene pairings."
Well, I am no genetics expert, but I am not sure how he proved that. I do
know that when two "jungles" are mated that it is still "pot luck" with
the offspring. My understanding of simple recessive genes is that if both
progenitors possess the trait, then the offspring MUST (ie: albinism as
stated previously.) I tend to believe that it is a little more
complicated than simple. He states that a partial striped daughter bred
back to the father produced a full stripe, but goes no further than that
in his explanation.
Case in point. I had a trio of "normal" geckos that produced the vast
majority of my babies last year. The male was what has been referred to
as 'hypo melanistic' and was very nice looking. The color and pattern
combinations of the offspring ran the gambit: normal, high yellow,
jungle, circle back, tangerine a few hypo xanthics (snow) and even a
reverse striped (my FIRST hatchling by the way.) A couple could be termed
as "screamers" but most just had the trait noticeable. Now, what are the
chances that each of these animals EACH possessed the proper genetic code
to produce ALL of those possibilities. FSN!
Throw in the study done by Viets regarding temperature and the
heritability of pigmentation and you really screw the whole mess up.
For anyone that is interested, Ron states that hypo melanistic is the
"snow" variant. I like Beverly's explanation better, hypo xanthism, as it
better states the true nature of the beast: a lack of yellow.
One interesting fact about the Tremper/Rainwater albino crosses is that
they are dihybrid and can then produce either of the strains of albino.
Cool.
Whew!
