Hi Hilde,

I think the vets are trained to say "UV for all herps." They are very
interested in what breeders do and their successes and failures to
confirm the theoretical upbringing they received at vet school. The
bottom line is... breeders don't use full spectrums on leos. The
consensus is that there aren't any ill effects from this. The same goes
for the "mealworm" diet some breeders use exclusively. On paper (Dr.
Frye's paper), this diet looks bad, crickets offering superior
nutrients. In real large scale breeder set-ups, it works. Year after
year after year.

The UCD vet residents and students work with me on a regular basis on
things like that. They come over and tour several times a year. They
just don't see enough geckos to give a real solid description of
husbandry. I don't have their medical knowledge, so it works out! ;-)
