Cassie,
Since you have not had Phelsuma before, and this sounds like a Phelsuma cepediana,
take a pass. They are difficult even for experienced folks. If you are involved
with the Southern CA herp society there are some folks who are good with Phelsuma
that can help you. One of the past presidents has bought many Phelsuma from me and
is definitely qualified to pass on tips.
Pareodura pictus are very good, see my article "Five Great Pet Shop Geckos" in the
Reptiles USA Annual. I cover them in there. "Geckos: a pet owner's manual" by the
Bartletts is also very good on the basics and covers this gecko.
