My experience with my picta was that breeding females
like live plants as they help hold moisture in the
soil and so make a great place to lay eggs. My
female's digging managed to kill the hardiest
succulants.
For set-up, remember, picta need ALOT of calcium for
continous breeding so you probably want to plan on
separating your females for a rest period. These were
my first breeding attempt and I nearly lost my female
to hypocalcemia even though I was dusting all her
crickets. I've had females lay eggs for more than
four months after being separated from a male (the
last months' eggs weren't fertile, but they still
required calcium!)
For heat, most of mine don't seem to care whether it
is overhead or underneath heat since *most* of what
they get is heat retained by objects in the tank after
my timers go off. Some like to bask UNDER objects
like terra cotta pots--I guess and overhead light
would work better for them. (Come to think of it, I
probably need to switch them!)
