I've seen that happen with R. ciliatus.
I would have bet money that I had a pair, but for some reason they weren't
breeding, though both were over a year old.
Thinking the female might need a bit of TLC to get into breeding condition, I
removed her to her own tank. Two or three days later, she was a he.
I'm thinking it might be the same idea as some fish do - masquerade as a female
to avoid aggression from the dominant male? Maybe some chemical inhibitors
secreted by the dominant one keeps the more submissive one from developing
sooner (very common in tadpoles for example)?
