[Gecko] Strange behavior

My Male white-lined gecko was licking himself today in an odd spot.... how do i put htis with out makin it sound totally nasty.. he was licking the base of his tail... ya know where the body and tail meet... ya their you know what i mean right?!?! is this regular?? it was really weird because i have never seen him do it before..
