One of the wholesalers to whom I sell some of my captive borns has offered to
sell me some unusual wild caughts at very attractive prices. Aside from
ethical considerations (which are considerable), my concern is with treating
the animals for parasites.
Simply put, is it possible for me to treat geckos with over-the-counter
products, e.g., Tetra's "Rid Worm"? Even if I had a competent herp vet (and I
don't), I imagine the cost would dull the luster of the wild caughts in a
hurry. I do have access to a farm supply store, and I seem to recall seeing
bottles of Flagyl, etc., in the livestock section.
Also, the day I was there the wholesaler received several hundred wild caught
House Geckos from Florida (I couldn't determine the species). My own limited
exper-ience (when I was younger, less self-conscious, and a lot more agile)
suggests that catching them by hand is nearly impossible; Brown Anoles, in
contrast, are easy. Do any of you know how how collectors in Florida catch so
many? Again, I know they are not rare in many urban areas, but to see several
hundred geckos released from a bag was staggering.
