Hi Lori,
You have a phone call to make, to the seller. The gecko should not be skinny
from a 2 day ship. What a mess! I don't envy your position if someone was
willing to ship you an animal like that. Let us know what the breeder says. Did
you see a photo of the gecko beforehand?
I would have put one airhole in the box, reasoning behind that is to not let in
too much warm air and overheat the gecko. I don't think your gecko was oxygen
deprived in the average sized shipping box (see the new Reptiles magazine
article on shipping by Rex Searcy).
It is alarming that a shipper would ship 2 day during this type of national
heatwave. I won't ever ship two day in this type of weather. Actually I avoid
two day shipping. My parameters are 90F outbound and 90F receiving, and also
for likely points of transfer inbetween. If the temps exceed those, and
depending on the type of gecko the temp max may have to be lower, I will not
ship. Cool packs are used accordingly. You can use
http://www.weatherchannel.com to check those temps yourself.
In the meanwhile, hydrate that gecko! Offer water, of course, and soak in
Pedialyte for 10mins 2x daily. The day after shipping offer food. The gecko
will likely be too stressed to eat for a day or so after shipping.
