Hi Becky,
I think I missed your original post. Is Lauren a Leopard gecko? Many
things can cause a gecko to loose weight and not eat. I would make sure the
cage is at the proper temperature and that the substrate is not something
that the gecko could eat and become blocked.
What you may want to do is hand feed this gecko, so that you can obtain a
fecal. I usually use Emeraid II (bird feeding food) or A/D canned dog/cat
food. Your vet will probably have these products. I suck the food into a
syringe and tickle the corner of the geckos mouth until they open. I then
slowly feed 1/2 -1cc a feeding (for a leopard or fat tail gecko).
Once you are able to get a fecal sample, you might want to ask your vet if
they can check it for crypto. I know at our practice we are seeing a lot
more of this parasite in snakes and geckos. The parasite is very small and
the person doing the fecal needs to know what they are looking for. It is
also shed intermittently, so not all samples will show positive. You might
have to do a few samples to get a positive result.
