Hello Julie,
I understand your frustration. I ran into this same thing at the summer
reptile expo in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The organizer was advertising the show as a
captive bred expo but was letting vendors in if they promised to guarantee
that their WC animals were healthy. Most of the geckos there were
wild-caught and the vendors had no knowledge of their care or scientific
name.

One of the most important things for beginners when looking for geckos to
purchase is to "ask lots of questions!". If the vendor can not answer simple
questions such as Scientific name, age of the gecko, care of the gecko, etc.
walk away and find someone who can. Quality does cost more, but you will be
so much happier with a healthy gecko that you can properly care for.

Subject: [Gecko] Lack of selection and scruples at IRBA San Diego

Hi Gexers,

Just got back from the San Diego IRBA show. I seemed to be the only one
offering any quality cb gex besides leopards, how sad. I remember the
days where you could buy Knob tails, Chondrodactylus, Webfoots and
Oedura from several quality vendors. This time I was very disappointed,
cheap wc abound, and 99% of people not knowing the difference between cb
and wc if I guessed correctly.

One vendor was selling albino het leopards for $10, and something
labeled "albino" for $15. Both types were skinny hatchlings. I attempted
to locate the vendor but did not have any luck, I will be filing a
complaint with IRBA for both the lowball pricing, which is discouraged
at IRBA events, and the albino hatchling that likely was not.

Sigh!
