Hi, Our phelsuma (grandis) often miss the crickets while hunting. They would occasionally grab a bark chip instead of the cricket. They would then beat the bark chip against the bamboo or glass, the same as they did with crickets, to kill it. After 5 to 10 secs of banging they seemed to understand they had the wrong thing and drop it. The night time thing also seems in line with our grandis. We feed them in the daylight but may crickets hide. When the tank lights go out the crix come out and if there is some room light the geckos will hunt. Maybe they are worse at targeting in dim light. Anyhow, I bet your gex are doing the same behavior. [You just have to be obsessed with watching day geckos to see the occasional mis-grab 8-) We kept the daygex in the family room for quite some time so they got a lot of attention]
