Thought I'd pass on this informative post from Amanda ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Read on. Amanda has some good ideas including freezing Ensure, Pedialyte, and baby food as "ice" cubes for thawing when needed.
When I tried to freeze a baby food based mixture I made the consistency seemed to change upon thawing. It became more runny. Have not tried freezing Ensure or Pedialyte.
Happy Geckolidays to all!
Peace and hope,

--- Begin Message ---I have had a lot of success in this area. For iguanas I used to use the standard ensure with banana etc. I was finding that for most igs this is hard to take by mouth. If I tube feed its fine but I dont like to be so intrusive if I don't have to. I found that the ensure was so runny that the iguanas would quite often get it coming out their nose (ie-aspirated it which is a big bad thing!) and I think it is because there is so little consistency they have a hard time feeling that its there and continue to breath without swallowing. I have come up with a mix of vegetable baby foods that has been very successful. I have yet to have any trouble with it. I feed about 20ml/kg every 12-48 hrs. When I had an anorexic omnivore I decided a chicken casserole baby food was the way to go. (incedentally this animal had a similarily ill sibling in a pet store that tried force feeding it whole crickets...my animal lived and the other died). He was such a tiny little thing and have pretty severe mineral deficiency (ie calcium) so I alternated feeding .01 of my formula and .01 liquid calcium 4-6 times a day. I was phenomenally successful. I think baby food is an awsome forcefeeding formula base. One thing I worry about though is the high salt content of the chicken casserole baby food. But since I have had nothing but success and it is never more than short term feeding I figure its ok.Since nothing seems to have a long life span once you open it (ensure, baby food or pedialyte) I usually freeze it in individual ice cubes and thaw when needed. I think that they probably keep decently in the freezer for at least a few months. I have never had to force feed a carnivorous lizard. I always thought that if I did that a/d would be a good choice...maybe I will just stick with the baby food! Amanda ------------------------ Yahoo!
