Apparently, vermiculite has been removed from the selves due to its bomb making capacities.  I swear I know no more!

I've used perlite with no problems.  The thing about it is it just allows for diffusion into the egg, it doesn't hold water.  Which is good because it prevents too much contact with water.  Water added to a perlite container settles at the bottom and in the grooves.

I've found that crushed perlite is an excellent medium, the smaller pebbles seem to prevent accidents better.
