How odd. When I was station there, I was in the Army, but actually stationed
on the AFB, I used to road cruise the roads on the missile range itself, all
the time. I can't remember the exact names, nor spelling of all the areas,
but basically from Tularosa Gate north to the lava beds, from Tularosa Gate
west to Rhodes Canyon gate, and from there both north and south. All I
usually saw (Crotalus wise) was virids, very, very rarely an atrox.
I found, once, several miles in on the white sand dunes by the Air Force
installation called RATSCAT, a Sistrurus, which I thought was pretty
interesting, as there was nothing around, I mean literally nothing, except
sand.
The most unusual snake that I ever found during that time, was a
subocularius, south of Rhodes Canyon.
Basically there were roads in a 'H' shaped that I cruised most often. This
was from the AFB (on the missile range itself) to the access gate called
Tularosa (sp) Gate. From there I could continue north to the lave beds, I
could also head west to the Rhodes Canyon Gate and from there, go south
(taking me all the way to the main post of White Sands Missile Range (the
main area by the Organ Pipe Mtns) or north that would eventually take me to
the little Army outpost at the very NW end of the range (and I've just
spaced out it's name).
During my time off duty, I would often head up to the mountains, east of the
range (forgot there name, Sacramento maybe), up to Cloudcroft, and sometimes
over and up to Reidoso (sp) and sometimes even further east from Cloudcroft,
and back down the eastern side to another little town, whos name escapes me
at the moment.
Best,
Fred
