I have seen the two different tail ends also.
Thanks for confirming my theory. I am now
reasonably confident with the henkeli sexing theory. A stripe on
the back of a hatchling indicates it is a male.
Where is the notch on the tail of male
phantasticus?

theory
Hi Preston,
Yes. A breeder friend of mine showed me that a few years back. Nice to be
able to sex them from the day they hatch! :) Female U. lineatus have two white
stripes and males have the mottled pattern in the center of two black/dark
stripes on their bacsk. Another trick with U. phantasticus is the notch on the
tail in males. Females don't seem to have this.
Another observation:
Some U. lineatus have a blunt tail end, some have a sharp little pointy
end!

I have a new sexing theory for U.
lineatus. I have absolutely no proof yet, but here is what I
think: I believe that male
hatchlings have splotches on their backs, as opposed to females, that have
stripes. Both have stripes on the uper sides of the
body. Has anyone ever
noticed this?
