Actually I should have said "nocturnal species CAN actually synthesize their own D3-
rather than RELYING ON THEIR diet."- I dont think the vet was implying that they would
always synthesize all of their D3.

Something I've been interested in.... I keep leopard geckos and on a recent trip to
the vets, the vet told me that a study had shown that contrary to what many people
believe; nocturnal species do actually synthesize their own D3- rather than getting it
from their diet. Not only that, but they are actually able to synthesize the D3 much
more efficiently than diurnal lizards... This enables them to synthesize sufficient
amounts of D3 by basking for a very short time when the sun is at its weakest (sunrise
and sunset). Unfortunately my vet was not able to tell me the source of this
information... anyone know where I could find such info?

Best wishes,
Pauline
