Hi Julie,

Just checking to see how you are packing your geckos now.  Know that at least one batch of your heat packs from RLD did not perform.
That was from Superior, I believe the RLDs have been good.

      *    Have you gone back to him? to Superior Enterprises?
RLD 60 hours.

      *    Are you using only 60 hr HPs now for more even heat?
That's the ticket! Also longer heat, these things stay warm for three days, a little warm on the fourth day. This is reassuring considering possibility of delays. I don't think UPS has had many significant delays for the last two years I have been using them though.

What is your current source for cardboard and for styrofoam boxes?
Superior Enterprise. Very cheap! Less than $4 per box if I remember right.

Recently I heard about this stuff called Insulfoam (3/4") which has a R factor of over 5.0.  One side is covered with aluminum foil.  It's available at places like Home Depot.  The fellow just cuts it to size, top, bottom, sides as a liner for all his boxes.  He says 3/4" Insulfoam is far superior to the styrofoam we get in premade styro insulated boxes!!!  I am looking for something better than the "premade" styrofoam boxes.
I don't ship if it is going to be that cold! The Superior Enterprise boxes (you make them up, he sends you the components) are just fine in temps approx 30F with styro popcorn as packing material, a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom, then a layer of styro pops, then a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom of the deli cups with the gex in them. This makes the box "smaller" and keeps them warmer in cold conditions.

In "transition" days from spring to summer I use both cool and heat packs. The small cool pack will melt by nightfall and the heat pack will keep them warm on a cool night's journey. It is mild here right now (low 80s) and I am using popcorn and no heat or cool packs since it is mild in my destinations and UPS hubs this week.  During 85-90F streaks I use newspaper exclusively because it does not retain heat like the styro pops.  I also put in a small cool pack for the journey out of the Sacramento-Ontario (next hub in SoCal for east coast shipments) area during 90F temps. I don't ship over 90F.

So far so good, knock on wood (my head!) ;)

Then there is the whole story about how I pack the guys in deli cups, each species is different, however, I could probably do a write-up about that soon.
