Thanks Elizabeth and Julie for your responses. Unfortunately for me it took too long 
to receive responses from this listserve (due to server problems) so I didn't know I 
had to leave the gecko in the sugar or to treat his hemipenes with oil (or lubricant, 
which I didn't have). So now he is at home on paper towels until I can get him to the 
vet tonight. I'm at work. His hemipenes look mostly retracted but there looks to be 
some blood.

I think it is a combination of water, or lack thereof, and sand. Water has been a big 
issue for me as of late. Only one gecko drinks when I spray the terrariums but they 
all eat well.

Thanks again and I'll let you know what turns out.
