Uroplatus malama should have no spines at all except for the 'horns' over each eye. According to Nussbaum & Raxworthy's description as a new species (in either 1992 or 1994) the word 'malama' comes from a Malagasy dialect meaning 'smooth'. It's a shame you didn't happen to have a camera, it would be nice to see pics. I've only seen 2 pictures of U. malama; one on the GGA website and one taken by a friend at a zoo in the US (can't remember which zoo). I'd heard rumors that someone I am acquainted (sp?) with received a pair of 'ebenaui' that were actually U. malama. He received them from an importer in the US. I do not know firsthand the validity of the claim. It would be very tough and the odds minimal that one would happen to acquire a pair on accident. Finding one U. malama is so rare in itself, a pair is unbelievable. Anyways congrats on seeing U. malama. I would think you are one of few to have seen them.
