Chuck, Nactus multicarinatus and Nactus pelagicus are morphologically very similar. Zug and Moon (1995, Herpetologica 51:77-90) used multivariate analyses (which looks for correlations between multiple variables) of over 30 characters to support the recognition of N. multicarinatus. You should check out this paper if you want to get a handle on possibly using morphology to id your geckos. Chromosomal analyses have shown that 2N = 28 for N. multicarinatus and 2N = 35 for N. pelagicus (Moritz 1997, Evolution 41:1252-1266). Given the difficulties and stress involved in measuring and counting characters on live geckos and the evil nature of multivariate statistics your best bet is to try and track down the dealer and ask where they came from. Good luck. -- Best regards, Tony mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
