Hi all,
I just wanted to report the wonderful news!!! I just bought my first rhacodactylus ciliatus(sp?not sure if I have the spelling correct.) After about 3 months of research and well worth it too. I was thinking of getting a nuu ami gecko, or a nuu ana gecko. The crested gecko happened to be in that group of geckos in articles I've read. I looked at the pictures and prices too he he he, and found that the crested gecko looked a lot more appealing and easier to take care of.
Congrats on your new gecko! I'm not knocking your choice, however, I think the leopard is simpler - doesn't need misting, special lighting or plants, eats crickets/mealworms and is happy. If folks really understand and are willing to follow the care sheet/book well I think R. ciliatus is also a good choice.
So I decided to go with a crested gecko(rhacodactlylus ciliatus). I looked at the reptile dealer closest to me and I found Regal Reptiles in Rhode Island.
I don't like getting animals shipped to me, I've had a bad experience and it's really cold where I live right now.
Sounds like someone did not arrive alive? That happens to even the best reptile shippers every great once in a while. I think concern about shipping is an important reason to get references on the breeders you are considering and look at customer comments on the website. How long have they been in business? Those in business longer usually have a good handle on shipping. Also ask them to explain how they ship geckos and what their policy is if all does not go well.
I went to Regal Reptiles and they are very informative about the crested gecko. I mean they showed be a bunch of different morphs and let me handle them. It was so much fun. Then I looked at their baby crested geckos, and fell in love. I had to get a baby and that's what I came home with.
I would not start a beginner off with a baby of any kind of gecko. Too little margin for error in the developing gecko. A well-established, good feeding subadult is the best bet as far as getting the gecko young. Hopefully that is what you have here and not a finicky hatchling.
I heard crested geckos morphs are unlimited, is this true?
Probably. What do you think Allen Repashy(he is on the list)?
I believe I have a flame/tiger morph, but it's too young to tell yet. I'm not sure what the sex of it is and I'm not sure what to name it either. Could you guys help me out? These guys are very easy to sex when they are sexually mature, the males have two prominent hemipenes just past the vent. Females don't develop the hemipenal bulges. See Allen Repashy's new Rhac book or search the 'net for example photos, I'm sure there are tons out there.
