Paul,

I don't object that you have your own equipment and do your own analysis, that is cool. Of course you can save money doing this. I am with Melody on this one in that she uses a non-domestic vet as backup to make sure she has not missed anything and for proper meds and dosages. Relative to other types of veterinary care, fecals are cheap. If you have a relationship with a vet then most times you can skip the physical exam and just bring in the poop. What I object to in your methods is designing a treatment plan using meds without at least consulting a vet that you have a prior relationship. Even this is assuming you have not missed anything in your fecal smear. If you misdiagnose you have put your geckos through a significant stressor with the medication process. For newbies info, each time you medicate a gecko you are stressing it out. The treatment and often the meds themselves are very rough on the gecko. If a treatment is not effective it will have to be changed and the gecko will have to be exposed to the stress again. Then there's the whole deal with choosing a med....vets are the source for that one as they are continually analyzing the latest research and input from their colleagues.

The point I am trying to get across to folks keeping gex is that they should establish a relationship with a non-domestic vet. Not every interaction with them is $ based, and they are a valuable source of info when it comes to your gex's health.

Garett,
I definatly dissagree with Julie on this one, on my web site I have all my equipment, where I purchased it. and how much it cost. Melody has a good arrangement with her vet, paying a vet and trusting him/her with my pets life for something I feel I can do, and if I cant correct the problem the vet is always a back-up. Just seems so me it pays to do things your self especailly if you have more than 2 herps.

    Subject: [gecko]parasite question

So I have realized that if I want to be a herper I am going to
learn how to check parasites myself but one thing I am wondering
about is once I know what parasites need to be treated, how do I
get the meds? Do I go to the vet for them? Or can I get them from
    somewhere else?
