Greetings from northern Australia,

We have had some great sightings of Leaf-tailed Gecko, SALTUARIS CORNUTUS,
in the last few nights. A huge male, 25 cm, with an original tail and a
female [Sex allocation presumed on behavioral grounds.] almost as large with
a regrown tail seen three nights in a row and an attempt at mating observed.
Unfortunately when I said, " Red light only." One of my guests did not think
that precluded flash photography. The female
took off about 40cm so I took my guests away.

The male had been waving his tail and displaying it in her direction. He was
head down and 30 cm above her when first seen but his body was bent to the
left (his) and the tail twisted in a way that would come close to maximising
its visual size, viewed from below. There was much licking of lips from this
individual, not a commonly observed behaviour. He then edged down very
slowly and oblivious to our lights. He licked her tail and then proceeded to
work his way over her. At the time he moved his front left leg over her left
hind leg a flash photo was taken and she ran off. I am not sure whether it
was the light or a touch from him that caused the departure. Regards,
Alan
