Hi Rick,
I don't have tokays, but my advice would be to quit handling them for a
while, let them settle in for a few weeks first. A whole new evironment
is already a lot of stress for them, and anything you can do to minimize
that stress is good. Then I'd first try hand (or spoon, stick, etc.)
feeding them, to create a positive association with you as the Food God.
Then gradually increase the closeness and amount of contact. The way
to a gecko's heart is through the stomach!
Hope this helps,
Melody

Hello!
I am kind of a lurker on this list usually. I have several crested
geckos that are a few years old now, first and second generation captive
bred. They're doing great, and are my first geckos.
I just bought a breeding trio of Tokays. They're captive bred, and are
by all measures much more docile than any other Gekko gecko I've ever
seen. However, they're still not exactly "tickle him under the chin"
friendly. They'll bite when they feel threatened, restrained, or
sometimes just because. They DON'T rush 'n' attack like a lot of wild
caught tokays do.
Two questions: Any tips from people who have successfully gotten these
guys tamed down, or am I about as far as I'll get with them? I try to
hold them every couple days for a while, but I'm resorting to latex
gloves because that keeps them from being able to make me bleed as easily.
And, they don't seem to be eating much. They've been in my possession a
week, and it's a little hard to guage how much they've eaten and how
many prey have escaped into their bark bedding. I know they've eaten
some silkworms, because they don't burrow. So that's my other question
is how much of what have people generally fed these guys. I"ve tried
mealworms, superworms, silkworms, and mealworm beetles. The supers and
the silkworms are the only things I KNOW they've eaten some of, but
still not much.
Sorry this is so long, but I want to make sure I'm doing these guys
right. Any other tips or asides you want to throw in will be welcome as
well.
Happy Memorial Day weekend!
Rick Gale
