Guys --

I just grabbed the latest gEDA/gaf out of CVS and tried to build it.
My build failed with this error:

/usr/local/src/geda/gaf/gschem/src/x_autonumber.c:1082: undefined reference to
`gtk_combo_box_get_active_text'

I am glad to see that so much work has been done in gEDA/gaf. It's
wonderful that gEDA has such a large number of passionate and devoted
developers!

However, one of the ground rules for modifying gEDA/gaf is that we are
sticking to stuff reliant upon GTK-2.4 and below. However,
gtk_combo_box_get_active_text was introduced in GTK-2.6:

http://developer.gimp.org/api/2.0/gtk/GtkComboBox.html#gtk-combo-box-get-active-text

Therefore, we are at a crossroads. Either:

* The person who included this fcn could please replace it with
something GTK-2.4 compliant

or

* We decide to allow GTK-2.6 (or above) funcs into gEDA/gaf. This
involves a large discussion with all developers followed by an
executive decision from Ales.

Personally, I'd prefer we just stick with GTK-2.4 for now. That means
that this fcn call be replaced with something GTK-2.4 compliant.

FWIW, one of my main boxen is a FC1 box with an upgraded GTK (2.4.4).
Yes, it's old, but lots of geda-users are running on seriously old
equipment. Hardware designers just want a platform which works, and
don't want to spend their time fooling around with upgrading to the
latest Linux this or that. Therefore, they (like me) tend to keep
runing on older boxen which already have everything installed and
running. Sensitivity to this reality is important to maintain in
order that gEDA continue its ongoing acceptance by non hardcore Linux
geeks.

I hope this e-mail triggers some code changes. Please let me know if
there is anything I can do to overcome this obstacle. Thanks for
listening to my rant.

Cheers,

Stuart
