I tried it with CVS HEAD version.
gschem prints a warning message (Could not open log file:
path_to_logfile/gschem.log) and continue running. All the messages that
usually go into the log file are printed to the console.

I thought it might be my old version of gschem which is why
I sent an email rather than submitting a bug report.
