Icons are not there to replace the name of the program or name of the mime-type (that's why you have these spelled out in your menu / file manager beside the icon). The purpose of the icons is that when you associate them in your mind with the specific program/mimetype they represent a graphic shortcut to reading the program/mimetype name. But they are nothing but sketches. Try making them at 24x24 or even 16x16 and see how recognizable they get.
