Ok. The second try installed successfully. During the first attempt, I
had only /usr/local/share/ but no icons/... directory. I was thinking
there might have been some problem with creating a multi-level deep
directory (i.e. mkdir /temp/temp/temp/...). Not sure why the second
attempt worked?

I use the Gentoo distro.

I haven't had a chance to play too much, but this looks like a clean,
simple interface that may be a good start for tying all of these
programs together.
