It might appear that way because its queueing up redraws until the program is idle. Less "snappy" if gschem is busy hammering the CPU, but hopefully in the long run faster. Those changes were necessary to make gschem run anything other than glacially slowly on a composited desktop. Perhaps there are still improvements which we can make though, queueing some "frames" of redraw whilst panning is taking place, to make it feel more responsive.
