I use a workaround to get printable area defined as gschem is now. It might be expandable to something that you could turn on or off and be near zero effort compared to my method. What I do to define print area is draw a bounding area of skinny gschem boxes along edges so when I print with no margins, I get the data on the page all the way to my printer's ability to print, as large as possible. I like plenty of detail per page rather than many pages that make up one layer of hierarchy. Printing all the way to the edges helps me put one concept per page the way I like it.
