the version of biso was indeed the problem. The debian repository 
contains two bison packages. Versions are 1:2.3dfsg-5 and 1.35-4.1
I misread the colon for a dot and concluded, the 1.35 is newer. 
In fact, it is quite ancient. Anyway, configure did not seem to notice. 
After I installed the 1:2.3dfsg bison package everything compiled fine. 
Self compiled xgsch2pcb works with this let-up too. Thank you for helping 
me out!
